Location: White Sands National Monument, New Mexico
Collection: Landscape Sand Dunes New Mexico
Camera: Canon 20D. Lens: 105mm
Photographer's note: The sweeping sand dunes at the White Sands National Monument in Southern New Mexico are extensive, and unique. In the moments around sunrise and sunset, the sand colors can turn amazing shades of red/orange. I received permission from the Department of the Interior to enter the park several hours before sunrise. A 1-mile hike across isolated dunes, guided by the light of a full moon, brought me to this spot. After a 45 minute wait in twenty degree temperatures a sliver of sun light edged over the horizon, painting this dune in brilliant sweet light. (Photographers call the natural soft light which appears just around sunrise and sunset "sweet light.") Less than a minute after this photo was taken, the sun was fully lit and the colors had disappeared. [For more information on White Sands National Monument visit NPS - White Sands]
