Photographer's note: West Thumb Geyser Basin sits on the edge of Yellowstone Lake. It is filled with volcanic heated hot springs which produce clouds of steam all day long. When that steam is mixed with below freezing temperatures and warm water from nearby Yellowstone Lake, the effect can be dramatic. This photo, taken just before sunrise at 7 a.m. captures the almost dream-like quality of trees shrouded in a think veil of fog and steam.
