Photographer's note: While driving down a dirt road in Grand Teton National Park, some movement in the distance caught my eye. After hiking down a small hill I found this bison grazing at the edge of a field and began photographing. For over 15-minutes I stared through the telephoto lens making minor focus adjustments as I snapped various images. Suddenly when I couldn't focus the lens any longer and looked away from the viewfinder I realized he was now less than 50 feet away. At almost the same moment he turned to look directly at me when I captured this photo, then grabbed my gear and hike quickly back up the hill.
