Photographer's note: Long before sunrise I saw a herd of bison, over a mile away, moving slowly down a hill toward a field of prairie grass. For over an hour, I hiked nearer to the herd, waited for them to feel comfortable with my presence, and then repeated the process until I was less than 100 feet away. Although the sky was fully overcast, just moments after sunrise the light rays found a way through two clouds sending beautiful shafts of light into a distant forest. At nearly the same moment, this bison seemed to celebrate by exhaling and releasing a cloud size breath of air.
