~The Ascent~
Jupiter Inlet, Florida

The 108-foot tall Jupiter Inlet lighthouse, built in 1860, was one of six lighthouses constructed during the 1800's to aid in shipping navigation. Climbing the 105 cast iron stairs shown above and photographed from the floor looking upward leads visitors to the light itself and an outside viewing deck. Visible for over 24 miles, the light has been in continual operation except for a brief period of several years during the Civil War. Today the operation of the light and surrounding 120 acres that was once part of the US Navy and Coast Guard is managed by the US Bureau of Land Management and Jupiter Inlet Historical Society.
